Princess Spud ...

What do you guys think? See a resemblance?
My swelling continues to go up ... just when I couldn't imagine it getting any more swollen. I made an appointment for MLD Therapy tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes. I think the long walk today wore me out, so I have been taking it very easy since then. I have switched from the ice packs to heat packs (rice socks), they feel good on the face but I really don't think they help with the swelling.
For those of you who have gone through orthognathic surgery, did you gain weight before you lost it? I just find this so incredibly odd. Yesterday I was 6 lbs heavier than when I left my house for the hospital, and I have gained another pound since yesterday! I am drinking lots and lots of liquids, but it just seems crazy I seem to be retaining so much water. My mom called my OS to make sure that was Ok, and it seems that it is, I just have not seen it happen to anyone yet.
Bruising is minimal, I have 2 dark dots on the bottom of my chin, but I am not sure if that will continue to progress as time goes by. I have been keeping arnica gel on it, so hopefully that is keeping the black and blue at bay.

Your swelling is impressive!! But so is your recovery! Keep it up, your swelling should start to go down around day 4 and you should start feeling better then also.

I have no idea about your weight gain. Very strange. I was in the hospital for 4 days and when I got home, I was about 5 lbs lighter... but I didn't weight myself before that so I can't really say... Your instincts are probably right about it being fluid they gave you...

Hmmmm. I'm not sure why the weight gain, but a couple of people come to mind who also commented on not losing anything. the one is Jen http://justjensjaws.blogspot.com/

who I believe gained a couple of pounds & didn't lose anything until attempting solid food.

Another is Kate http://www.archwired.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=18335&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Can't recall that either really figured out why/not, but you're not the only one :)

It's hard to say. If you're pretty sure alot of the gain is water retention, & there's no issues to the contrary, then by the end of the week as you get more & more active, and keep drinking LOTS of water, this should eventually get flushed out and see the weight back to (at least) 'normal'. Not to be gross, but is everything else "moving on out" with bathroom time? This can throw things off too.

Keep up the good work, Stephanie, you're doing amazing :)

Water is pretty heavy. Perhaps some of the meds are making you retain it? Or the stress of the surgery? I remember having a drip attached all night after a non-jaw surgery and being amazed at how they kept pumping in bag after bag of water and it just didn't seem to come out. Didn't weigh myself, but all that water must've added a few pounds.

Hi everyone, thanks again for your comments. I do think the weight gain is from water retention, I am drinking lots in hope of flushing it out. Since I am on clear liquids, only, maybe that is why I am retaining more water than most? I have also been careful about my section of liquids so i do not intake too much sodium. The Great Value brand (Wal-mart) has the least amount of Sodium in it's Chicken and beef broth. I have been able to go pee without a problem, although it seems I am drinking much more than is coming out. On the clear liquieds, I havn't really had to worry about going to bathroom the other Way ... clar liquids = only pee for me.
